According to the Yokohama Fire Department, of the 36 who were sent to hospital, a mixture of teenagers and middle-aged women, seven were warded while the rest received outpatient treatment.
More than 3,000 people who bought Yusuke's new book "KY" turned up to "high five" the star at the promotional event and spent hours waiting in the 33.3 degrees Celsius heat.
Some 500 had even waited overnight to meet the star.
Event organisers Wani Books announced at 1pm that they would conclude the event after the first 1,500 participants met Kamiji, and announced 30 minutes later that they would hold a similar event for the other 1,500 who turned up.
However, they were forced to pull the plug on the event at around 3pm when some of the participants had heatstroke.
Authorities sent 20 ambulances and fire engines to assist those stricken with heatstroke.
"We're sorry for all the inconvenience we have caused and apologize to all the people whose health we endangered," said a spokesperson on behalf of Wani Books and Kamiji's management agency.
A total of 859 people were hospitalized with suspected heat injuries in Japan on Wednesday as a heatwave swept the country.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 80 percent of the country's 737 observation stations recorded temperatures of above 30 degrees Celsius, while 148 observation stations recorded temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius.
Tatebayashi in Japan's Gunma prefecture experienced the highest temperatures in Japan on Wednesday, with temperatures soaring to a scorching 38.7 degrees Celsius.
